In luce veritatis — in the light of truth. This is a place for writing about the Catholic faith carefully and at length: what the Church teaches, what Scripture says, and what both look like from inside an ordinary life.

What you will find here

The writing falls into a few kinds, and they are worth distinguishing because they ask to be read differently.

• Reviews of religious texts — Scripture commentaries, spiritual classics, works of theology — read closely and assessed honestly.
• Personal writings on God, which are devotional rather than argumentative, and make no pretence otherwise.
• Philosophical and experimental thoughts, where an idea is being tested rather than defended. Some of these will be wrong.
• General life relating to God — shorter reflections on where faith meets the ordinary day.
• Topical series working through a single subject over several pieces, such as the theological virtues.

On sources

Citations are given so they can be checked. References to the Catechism of the Catholic Church appear as CCC followed by the paragraph number, and Scripture in standard book-chapter-verse form. Where something is my own opinion rather than the teaching of the Church, I have tried to say so plainly.

Corrections

Nothing here is a substitute for the Church’s own documents or for your parish priest. If something is in error — theologically, factually, or in the handling of a source — I would rather know. Posts that change carry an updated date.
